<< Back to Questions

Can I fix glass blocks anywhere?

It is important to ensure the area where you intend to build a glass block wall can take the weight. However, if you find it cannot, by using a mixture of Wallblocks plastic and glass blocks you will be able to reduce the overall weight to an acceptable level without altering the overall effect. If in doubt contact a structural engineer.

<< Back to Questions

How heavy are glass blocks?

Glass blocks weigh 65 kg/m2.

<< Back to Questions

How heavy are the wallbocks plastic blocks?

The plastic blocks weigh 15 kg/m2.

<< Back to Questions

Can the wallblocks fixing kit be used in shower cubicles?

Yes, as long as the surround is fixed to the block using Silicon sealant on the wet side only, and the blocks are built using Silicone sealant in the pre made Silicone Valley of the Wallblocks glass block surround. Only every alternative valley requires silicone (refer to our fixing guide). We accept no responsibility for use in shower situations.

<< Back to Questions

Is it possible to drill a hole in glass blocks?

No, it is not possible to drill holes in the glass blocks as they tend to implode, However, Wallblocks “Plastic“ is designed for this purpose and can be drilled to accommodate service pipes etc. up to 150mm diameter.

<< Back to Questions

Is it possible to cut glass blocks?

No, not glass blocks, but Wallblocks “Plastic” are designed to be cut and used in conjunction with conventional glass blocks that make cutting easy, allowing the panel to follow the contours of a coombed ceiling, or an arch etc.

<< Back to Questions

Does a glass block wall fixed with the glass block surround have a half-hour fire rating?

Not yet! At the moment we do not promote a wall fixed with our system to provide a half-hour rating. We are supplying a simple and effective method to erect a glass block decorative panel within a room. If a fire wall is required using glass blocks, use the conventional method of sand, cement, spacers, compression strips, reinforcing rods, mixing buckets, panel anchors, adhesive etc.

Fixing

Do I have to put in an aluminium-reinforcing rod in every course?

Yes, we recommend one reinforcing rod per course to ensure a very stable wall.

<< Back to Questions

How do I fix the aluminium reinforcing?

Simple, use the “T” piece fixing brackets included with the reinforcing rods, secured to the wall plate with a 15mm crosshead screw.

<< Back to Questions

How wide can I build the panels?

As wide as you wish, however, we recommend that panels be up to 4 blocks (800mm) wide before using a double-sided wall plate. That is to say build as wide a wall as you wish but put an upright wall plate at least every 4 blocks

<< Back to Questions

Q. How high can I build the panels?

As long as the reinforcing bars are fitted in every course, you can build up to 3m high.

<< Back to Questions

Do wallblocks.com supply the uprights and floor plates etc.?

Yes Wallblocks supply everything you need except glass blocks. We supply the uprights, floor plates, returns, and covering “D”section, in a choice of foil finishes. Alternatively, using a router your joiner can make the sections out of timber if foil finish not required.

<< Back to Questions

How do I fix the uprights?

We supply “L” brackets for the top and bottom of the upright if another panel is to be built alongside, or, “D” brackets for ending a panel. You will not have to order these items separately, as they are included with each section purchased.

<< Back to Questions

Can I fix the glass blocks between two fixed uprights (i.e. in a pre-set enclosed space)?

Yes, Watch DVD.

<< Back to Questions

What happens when I reach the top course in an enclosed pre-set space?

If the space is only the 200mm high, the interlocking pins on the glass block surround have to be removed, and the last block glued into place using a recommended adhesive. If space is say.220mm just continue and fill space above with spare floor or wall plate, wedge down and fill with Silicon or similar. Finish decoratively.

<< Back to Questions

Can I build a curved or snake wall?

No problem, Wallblocks glass block surround, or plastic blocks are easy to fix in a curve or snaked shape. Using the pre set angles (2m Dia. curve, supplied with our curved wall kit, or adjustable hinged angles (order separately), a dry fixed curve or “S” wall is easy. We supply fillers for use with the fixed curve (order separately) these fillers can be produced any colour or finish, but if using adjustable hinged angles you will have to make your own fillers, however we can colour or finish them to your specification if required. Also if 90-degree return is required we supply a 90 degree foiled return in 3-metre lengths.

Plastic Blocks

Do the Plastic blocks interlock with the glass blocks?

Yes, if the glass blocks are being installed using Wallblocks glass block surround, the plastic blocks will interlock perfectly. This is an important consideration when developing property, as it allows the developer without reinforcing the floor to achieve the desired effect for his clients. Now you can now mix and match keeping to the weight down to what the structural engineer allows, without the need to reinforce the floor.

<< Back to Questions

Can the Wallblocks system be used on floating floors?

Yes unlike conventional mortar build. Wallblocks glass block surround has in built compression so when the floor expands and contracts with heating systems, weight, movement ect. Wallblocks glass block surround allows for this, unlike conventional mortar,

<< Back to Questions

Do the plastic blocks scratch?

Yes, It is possible to scratch the plastic blocks, just as it is possible to scratch glass blocks. As long as no cleaners are used and use only a soft dry cloth or feather duster, this will not be a problem. Remember the head and tail lights on your car are probably made of plastic.

<< Back to Questions

Do the plastic blocks (plastic) change colour with age?

The plastic block is manufactured using U.V.stable colours.

<< Back to Questions

Can I use Wallblocks glass block surround externally.

Yes, provided it is for garden use, you can also use it to surround glass blocks and using the lighting kit have lit paving slabs etc. (provided, you have sealed it correctly.)

<< Back to Questions

Lighting stick

The L.E.Ds last approximately 50,000 hours at four hours per day that is 35 years before replacement.

<< Back to Questions

Is the lighting kit low voltage?

Yes, the circuit runs off a transformer and driver unit in blocks of fifty (if you wanted to light 200 glass blocks or more we can supply the necessary slaves and power supply for that project). However your requirement was for fifty or less our lighting kit can be purchased off the shelf. (Fully compliant power supply for E.U. and U.S.A.)

<< Back to Questions

What colour lights are available?

Each L.E.Diode. is able to emit red, green and blue, and is pre programmed to go through the full spectrum of colours including clear, it can be stopped on any colour, or between colours .You can also brighten or dim the lights depending on mood. Available with remote and/or foot switches or wired directly to mains supply.

<< Back to Questions

Can the lighting kit be used with plastic blocks?

Yes, Infact the lighting kit has a much better diffusion properties with the plastic blocks.

<< Back to Questions

Can I use the lighting kits in a shower cubicle?

We do not currently recommend the use of the lighting kits in shower cubicles, even though the lights are low voltage, but from our tests so far it would indicate that as long as the power supply is out with the shower room it should be O.K. Watch this space. But looks great as a kitchen kick plate!
